Penguins are Cool for First Grade Students!

First grade students went on a trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha without leaving their school. Students visited the zoo with the help of Distance Learning. The students were able to see the penguins from the zoo.
Julie Anderson , the Education Specialist at the Zoo, along with keepers of the penguins, introduced everyone to Grady, a South African Black-Footed penguin. The student learned many new facts about the warm weather penguins.
From there, it was time to look at the penguins in the cold weather penguin display. Three types of penguins live in the Penguin House at the Zoo: the Gentoo, the Rockhopper, and the King penguin.
Students learned about what penguins eat and how often they are fed. They found out that the keepers hide vitamin pills in the mouths of the “breakfast fish!”
Students learned what each type of penguin sounds like…one of them sounds like a donkey.
Students of Thayer Central 1st grade truly had a great visit to the zoo via Distance Learning.
