READING/LANGUAGE ARTS…Learning about kindness and knowing when and how to express it is crucial to young children’s growth.  By the time students reach second grade, they understand what it is to be kind or nice and what it is to be unkind or mean.  In this unit the students will reflect on and express their knowledge of kindness through discussion, reading and writing.

Some skills covered in this unit include:

suffixes                 irregular plurals              vowel digraphs

double consonants   compound words     long and short vowels

the schwa sound      silent consonants    summarizing

sequencing              capitalization         commas

proper nouns          quotation marks

MATH… Our unit focuses on topics that were introduced in first grade last year.  The four topics are:

          *numeration and place value

          *money

          *time

*collecting data and graphing the results

These concepts will be developed and expanded in the next few weeks.  As always, these skills are reviewed throughout the year.

SOCIAL STUDIES…Students get a simple economic overview of a community.  They distinguish between needs and wants, good and services.  They explore how people make, sell, and buy goods-recognizing that we are all consumers.  Students discover why people work.  They also examine a community’s needs and identify people who work for the community.
